JunkSpot - By Anthony Brice
---------------------------
Junk Spot is an arexx script to run in conjunction with Spot to automate
many of the mundane tasks you have to do every day while reading your
mail. The program is fully configurable via a seperate config file, and is
about as easy to use as it can get...
Features:
Random Hatemail - Use this when Mat Bettinson gets you anoyed, or someone
else in the anoying Fidonet circle.. Stab a couple of
keys and the person who sent that message gets Hate mail
left right and centre.. To avoid possible Moderator
conflicts this will naturally only send via Netmail.
Preset text - I use JunkSpot here every day for sending out Network adds
for Barnet to anyone who I read a message from who I think
may be interested in the Net. I also use it to blast out a
BBS add on a hot key if requested, or into the BBS adds
echo every so often.
Send file - Hit this gadget and you can send any text file you like
direct into a message in reply to something you read. A
small doc file, FAQ sheet. Version history etc etc..
Moderate - This button will send out a moderate message in either net
or Echo mail - Your choice - which adds the lines you have
configured before and after the message text and sends it
to the poster. You can also use it as a way of posting a
list of conference rules too via one of the default send
gadgets specified in the config file.. I use it to moderate
a conference in Barnet myself.
But I wouldn't advise trying to moderate someone unless you
actually are the moderator for obvious reasons :-) Then
again it's a good way of getting some ammunition to test
out the random HateMail option.. Note disclaimer in this
doc file though please :-)
No doubt there are many more uses that can be applied to this script but I'm
just covering a few ideas which I use it for, and which I wrote it for in the
first place.
Requirments:-
-------------
You'll need to be running a registered Spot of course.. The rexxsupport
library and the RexxReqTools library will also be needed. Everyone has
these anyway these days so I didn't see the need to include them within
the archive.
Erm also an Amiga may help :-)
Usage:-
-------
Just plug it into your Arexx menu within Spot - preferably on a hot-key,
and then just whack the key when you need to blast out some junkmail. The
Script will fall back with a requestor unless it's in the message window,
so you don't need to worry about shagging your system with this :-)
From then on it's just a matter of following the options. Peice of cake.
Disclaimer:-
------------
This script is totally freeware - all I require is a netmail saying thanks,
some comments, suggestions maybe, or anything like that.. Hell you can even
test out the HateMail option on me if you like, although you'll get some
pretty varied replies :-)
2:254/255.0 - fidonet, or anthony@backyard.demon.co.uk - Internet
I take no liability for how people use this script, as some of the options
you can perform with it may be shall we say risque, and may not make people
too popular with Midnight lines, Sysops, and other people that have to carry
all the junk mail flying around that this script can generate.. I merely ask
that you use this in a sensible manner and don't go to overboard with 40 megs
worth of hatemail to your mate Fred because he posted a BBS advert in AmigaUK
or something.. I believe HateMail to Mat bettinson may be turned a blind eye
to by lots of Fido hubs so naturally you can send as much as you like to
2:254/205.0 :-)
I EXPRESSLY give Nico Francois permission to include this script and doc file
in a future Spot distribution as my way of thanks for writing such a great
Point mail reader. He's more than welcome to use this as he wishes.
Future:-
--------
I had toyed with the idea of combining this little script with a lot of other
custom scripts I have written to use with Spot, to enable it to do all kinds
of other stuff as well as just junkmail etc. Like adding a file to a .FLO
file, Blasting out your PGP keyfile etc etc. Maybe on the cards but this is
the last version of JunkSpot I will release. Any further work on it will be
carried over into a larger, more multi-purpose script, to do other functions
as well.. Please netmail me if you would like me to work on something like
that in the near future.. This Arexx lark is becoming a lot of fun :-)
Thanks:-
--------
Could put a huge list here but it really isn't nescessary. I'll stick with
the essentials who've motivated - annoyed - me etc with this stuff.
Mat Bettinson - How could I not thank this irritating Australian for all
the arexx help, Flame Wars, techy advise etc this guy has
passed onto me. He's an arsehole, but I quiet like him :)
Stephen pearson - It was some of his spot stuff I originally started playing
with when I first got into Arexx so blame him if you don't
like JunkSpot :) Cheers, Steve!
Robert Dale - He's my boss feed, and constantly slams my code.. I ought to
Say cheers anyway or he'll snip my mail or something :(
The Zeus Authors - Without Zeus I'd still be messing about with piddly little
Arexx functions and not really learning the full power of
what Arexx can actually do with a bit of knowledge. Zeus
will be out soon so you can all wonder at arexx menus on a
BBS and the power it gives you, but cheers Alex and Nick
for letting me Betatest it in the first place :-)
And 'Hello' to all the Bastards in Barnet. Love you all.. Not!
History:-
---------
V1.0 first release - 4th December 1994
--------------------------------------
My first ever arexx script. Especially for Spot. Just to send out the
odd Advert here and there. Boy was I proud of it :-)
V1.1 update:- 8th December 1994
-------------------------------
Added multiple subjects as defaults as well as an option
to select new subject and post any text file via file
requestor. Put in multiple origin lines and optional
paths. Option to post to netmail, echo or all. Don't know
why I never put that in last time. Netmail now does a
write rather than reply to make it tidier.
V1.2 update:- 10th December 1994
--------------------------------
Will now read a config file with the path to it specified in
the first line of the script. Setup of the config is self
explanatory.
V1.3 update:- 22nd February 1995
--------------------------------
Updated to fix lots of Upper case titles and spaces in
message headers etc.. Looked real shit ;( Also took out some
stupid little bugs here and there too ... ;)
Added Support for random hatemail Enhanced.. I'd use this via
netmail only unless you really want to annoy people. I don't
take any responsibility for peoples use of this script of
course !
Put in the Moderate header, along with quoted message.. Yeah
JunkSpot will let you moderate now, should you actually
moderate an echo... I wouldn't try moderating in one if you
don't though ;) You can edit the moderating lines text at the start
of the script.
Added new configpath line at begining of the script and changed
the script around so that it will look for all text files
used as options within JunkSpot in this path.
Config file checking should be a lot more forgiving now..
Fixed silly mistake where I tried to open a RexxReqTools window
to report an error when it couldn't find the library to open one
to start with :-)
Will allow up to 5 predefined Settings for text files to send on
a Button now. Naturally you can still send a text file manually if
there's one you haven't configured up. At the moment it is forced
set to use exactlly 5 - no more or less - but I may fiddle this to
use a minimum maximum one day when I have more time.
20th September 1995 - Quick update to the doc to include my internet
address to upload it onto the aminet.
